Historically, conventional diesel generators equipped with Stage IIIA engines have been used to provide continuous power. However, this configuration can be optimized by utilizing a Battery Storage Unit (BSU) as the primary power source, with the diesel generator running solely to recharge the BSU. This eliminates issues related to light loading, which can negatively impact the efficiency and longevity of conventional diesel engines. When paired with one of our Stage V ‘Whisper’ Generators, this setup offers significant CO2 reductions and substantially lowers noise pollution, resulting in a more efficient and environmentally friendly power solution.
Here is an example of how these systems can reduce a productions carbon footprint:
- Conventional diesel generators with Stage IIIA engines emit approximately 2.7 kg of CO2 per litre of diesel burned. A Stage IIIA 60 kVA generator typically consumes around 12 litres per hour, resulting in approximately 777 kg of CO2 emissions over a 24-hour period.
- When using a hybrid setup that combines a Battery Storage Unit (BSU) with a Stage V Generator, the generator’s runtime can be reduced to about 6 hours (25%) within the same 24-hour period. With a Stage V Generator consuming approximately 10.5 litres per hour, this setup would cut CO2 emissions to around 170 kg/ 24hr. This hybrid configuration not only substantially lowers CO2 emissions but also mitigates issues related to light loading of the generator, as it operates primarily to support the outgoing load and recharges the BSU.
Through the implementation of these initiatives and our ongoing pursuit of improvement, we are dedicated to advancing sustainable temporary power solutions in the filming industry, whilst minimizing our environmental impact.
