What is a ground board?
A ground board (also known as a trackway board, ground protection mat etc) is a durable panel designed to protect surfaces from damage caused by foot traffic, vehicles, and heavy equipment. On film and TV sets, these mats help prevent rutting, scratching, and surface wear while providing a stable base for crew and machinery. Ground mats come in different sizes and thickness, to allow you to choose what best suits your needs, outdoor or indoors surface protection.
When should you use a ground board?
Using ground protection mats from the beginning of a shoot helps in avoiding costly repairs and supports compliance with location agreements. Ground protection mats are advised where filming involves vehicle movement (particularly heavy vehicles), heavy equipment placement, or high foot traffic on sensitive surfaces. Some sites require special care to not leave any damage to natural areas. Ground protection mats are ideal for these situations and placed from the beginning can help avoid costly fines.
How to choose the right ground protection?
There are many different options of ground protection for rent that you could choose. When picking, consider the load the ground protection will need to withstand. Trackway boards are capable of withstanding large loads and distributing weight unlike Correx boards which are better suited for set decoration protection and smaller amounts of traffic. Duration of use is also a large consideration. Correx, whilst cheaper, is not as heavy duty as trackway so if your ground protection is needed for a longer term shoot, it might be wiser to opt for trackway.
