Supply 2 Location Group Ltd. recently installed a 250kVA/575kWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at one of the UK’s largest filming studios. When approached for this project, the team conducted a comprehensive assessment, evaluating not only running costs but also the broader environmental impact. After evaluating multiple application options, they determined that pairing a large BESS unit with a Stage V 150kVA generator for charging, was the most efficient and sustainable solution.
The BESS now powers the site 24/7, supporting approximately eight cabins and a workshop. This setup has reduced generator runtime by 73%, resulting in a significant decrease in fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions. By pairing the BESS with the greenest traditional generator available, this solution offers the closest alternative to a permanent grid supply. This package has been operational for nearly three weeks, resulting in a remarkable CO₂ reduction of 14,458 kg. And that’s before even considering the fuel cost savings. To put the impact into perspective, here’s a breakdown:
- The generator runs at approximately 70% load when charging the BESS and supplying site power, with a fuel consumption rate of 18ltrs per hour.
- If the generator were running 24/7, potential fuel usage over a 40-week period would amount to 120,960ltrs.
- With the current setup, projected fuel consumption over the same period is 30,240ltrs—a 75% reduction.
- Assuming an average diesel cost of £1.50 per litre, the estimated fuel savings over the project would be approximately £136,080.
This highlights the significant cost and environmental benefits of integrating a BESS with the latest Stage V generator technology. This installation was also carried out, tested and certified in accordance with BS7909:2023 & BS7671:2018 (A3: 2024) by Supply2Location’s inhouse electrical team – reinforcing the Group’s position as a true one stop shop for all temporary power requirements.
